The start of living "frugal" - Homemade Bisquick?

Every Saturday my husband reaches for the yellow box and begins mixing together the "best pancakes ever" - according to him and the kids.  Today I am going to replace the Bisquick with the homemade version and see if they can tell the difference. I'll post an "edit" to this post with the results!

Homemade Baking Mix

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  1. Mix together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
  2. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 weeks or in the freezer for longer storage.
Makes approx: 6 cups
To make Biscuits
Mix together 1/3 cup of milk for every 1 cup of mix. Drop onto un-greased cookie sheets and bake @ 450ºF for 10-12 min.
*Add any additional ingredients you wish such as cheese or herbs before adding the milk.
* 1 cup of mix will yield about 6 biscuits.
To make Pancakes:
Mix 2 cups of mix with 1 cup milk and 2 eggs. Cook on hot griddle.
*I have not made the pancakes myself but have heard rave reviews about using this mix for them.
*As with the biscuits you can add any flavouring or other ingredient you would like, such as chocolate chips or blueberries.

My new year starts tomorrow!

I wanted to start this year of 2012 off living as the "Proverbs 31" wife.  Yeah - this did not start well! Verse 15 was repeatedly ignored for the first three days!

15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family

Day 1 was Sunday.  I did not wake up while it was still night, but I did provide something that resembled food to my kids! I woke up late, got the kids some cereal, rushed to get the family ready and then headed off to help teach 4-12 year old kids at church!

Day 2 was Monday.  I got up earlier but had to make a trip to the store for Milk.  This ended up being a one hour trip because I was able to go without the children and I was able to walk through the store in relative peace.

Day 3 is today.  Tuesday.  I woke up even earlier today.  7:30am.  I'm on the right track.  I think I am going to tackle this by breaking up this passage of scripture and working on it in sections.  I know I can do this with God's help!

So, my "Day 1" will actually start tomorrow.  I am going to assume that the "getting up while it is still night" part refers to the darkness of the hour.  I think I will be a better mom if I can sleep until at least 5 am!

Wanna wear my tutu?

That's what my 4 year old asked me as we were going out to play today! Of course the tutu didn't fit, but I love the sincerity in which she was so willing to share!  I would love to be able to wear a tutu over my jeans and spin around with my kids in the yard.  I guess I will have to make one!  Things like this are one of the many reasons I love homeschooling.  I love being able to take time out of the day and spin and play with the kids - developing their imaginations as well as the core fundamentals of education!
